The Verbum Dei Missionary Fraternity was founded by Father Jaime Bonet in 1963, in Mallorca, Spain. When Fr. Jaime was 14 years old, in a personal experience of dialogue with the crucified Christ, he felt the call to make God’s love known to all people.
This personal experience became the heart of his vocation and the germ of the future foundation of “Verbum Dei”. He dedicated himself intensely to preaching from a prayerful lifestyle that encouraged others to follow Jesus and announce him.
His apostolic activity gave rise to different groups. In this context, some young women expressed to Father Jaime the desire to consecrate themselves to God in this mission.
On January 17, 1963, the Bishop of Mallorca, Monsignor Jesús Enciso Viana, blessed their first house and chapel, beginning their life together, the Missionary Branch.
Already in 1966, some priests and young people began to live this same lifestyle. In the same year, the first missionary couple felt the call to dedicate themselves to the same charism and mission from their state of life.
On September 18, 1969, the Hon. Mr. Rafael Álvarez Lara erected the Verbum Dei Apostolic Institute in Pía Unión, made up of the three branches.
In 2000, Pope John Paul II gave his consent for the FMVD to be declared a single Fraternity of Consecrated Life.
Since the beginning of the history of Verbum Dei, there have been lay people who, in communion with the Fraternity, have felt called to share and live the spirituality, mission and charisma of Verbum Dei and together with the Fraternity they form the Verbum Dei Missionary Family . That is why there is a deep relationship and joint work between the Members of the Verbum Dei Family and the Verbum Dei Fraternity.

The Mission of Jesus calls us further, to go and make disciples of all the nations. ‘Missionary Disciples/Apostles – on the Mission’ focuses on integrating our faith with life, so that we can help to form others to be disciples of Jesus and evangelizers. We deeply understand that ‘Missionary Disciples/Apostles – on the Mission’ opens us to an experience of transformation through an integrated process of spiritual, human and pastoral formation, sharing of faith and spiritual accompaniment.
‘Missionary Disciples/Apostles – on the Mission’ takes place: Bi-Monthly on Sundays from 8am – 12noon.
A Filipino Community that extends hospitality by sharing a meal, creating bonds of friendship, and growing in faith through exploring books/passages of the Bible. Biblical and theological reflections respond to the hunger for the answers to our many questions.
Spiritual Direction is a way that we can spiritually grow on our faith journey. It is an opportunity to meet one-on-one with one of the sisters who are trained for this ministry. Spiritual Direction offers a person the opportunity to share their walk with God in a trusted space. It also helps to understand God’s movements and presence in one’s life and to better discern God’s will as it unfolds. Usually, spiritual direction takes place once per month on a Regular Basis, and for a nominal fee.

The experience of spiritual retreat is a gift in people’s lives. It is an ideal space to encounter oneself and the love of God through His Word.
In relation to this, the Community offers from the richness of the Charism: gatherings, silent retreats, pilgrimage as an experience of inner healing, activities to encounter God in nature, spiritual accompaniment in groups, and on an individual basis by appointment.
A retreat is a great way to carve out time and space to draw close to God and to experience His loving presence and care for our lives. Retreats are offered in both the Lenten and Advent seasons, special moments that help to prepare our hearts to receive more of His Love. They are also a great opportunity to meet new people, share meals together, and build community while sharing faith experiences. For more information about the retreats or to find out when the next one is coming up, please email: verbumdeichicago@gmail.com
